New cases, old cases
A few recent cases:
On August 26, 2011, at about 8:30 pm ("in the afternoon"?) some UBC students were driving in Vancouver when they saw a glowing orange/red object over Burrard Inlet. They didn't think it was a plane, but it "floated" up and out of sight over Grouse Mountain. they saw two other similar lights as they watched the sky for several minutes at the first one disappeared. (UFO Clearinghouse)
On August 30, 2011, during the evening over Geary, NB, a Canadian Army witness and his wife saw a "bright light travelling across the sky, with no sound or strobing lights like most aircraft."
As for an old case, I found in the National Archives files a report from October 5, 1970. At about 5:10 am local, radar control operators at Shearwater, NS, had been hearing radio reports of UFOs seen in the area. They were surprised to find a "good radar return" of a stationary object southeast of their position. their "precision radar" painted the UFO at 2500 feet and was observed for 10 minutes. Why did the observation end? Because "the controller discontinued surveillance to prepare for an aircraft recovery," and he also "did not take his sighting seriously." Yes, the military radar operator detected an unidentified target but didn't think it was worth bothering about. Only after he heard about "similar sightings" on commercial civilian radio did he file his official report.
Beyond the radar operator's personal view, a note at the bottom of the official report notes: "A barium rocket was fired from a rocket range in W. Virginia on Oct. 5/70 at 09:00Z." Thus, according to the NRC, the radar return was unexplained.
Except that a barium cloud 150 miles up in the atmosphere wouldn't give a "good radar return" of 2500 feet. Visually, sure, that would explain the UFOs, but not the radar observation, unless we assume that a "precision" instrument that routinely vectored military aircraft safely could be so badly miscalibrated or misread.

Canadian UFO Reports
Finally sorted through the whack o' UFO reports I received this week. More than 100 cases from 2011 (not including the ones I had already received from earlier this year), including 43 from August alone. These have come from Vike, Sightings, UFOINFO, PsiCan, DND, and Ufology Research.
Still, that's a loooong way from a record. We had 128 cases in August 2008. So what you're hearing about "record numbers of UFOs" and "massive UFO fleets" doesn't match what we're actually seeing. I know that MUFON has seen a big jump in online case reports, but it's difficult to say what that's attributable to. In Canada, at least, numbers of UFO reports are high, but not at record levels.
Most recent report:
August 30, 2011 10:00 pm Saint John, NB
Witness wrote: "Noticed a bright debris trail like the tail of a comet was coming down. Object slowed down and then changed direction to parallel to the ground and travelled in view for about 4 minutes. Looked like one red light. It went over the tree line, so I lost sight of it. I have two witnesses of the red light travelling, [but] I am the only person I know of that saw the comet like entry. This was at a very high altitude, even after it changed direction and slowed down it appeared to be very high. Higher than an aircraft landing at the airport about 5 miles from me." (UFOINFO)
Thanks to all contributors.

August 2, 2011 Edmonton, AB
While watching the ISS pass overhead, a dark object streaked W-E underneath it, and flashed a brilliant white light. Witness sees so many UFOs, notes: "They are becoming so commonplace, I am expecting them to drop in for tea." (MUFON)
August 6, 2011 McLean Lake, YK
Campers saw a fast moving lighted object that suddenly made "a figure 8" in the sky. The object seemed to have 3 lights on its underside. (Bretlyn)
August 8, 2011 ON
While starwatching, a witness saw a red light in the sky that soon resolved into a black, spinning disc. It hovered nearby for 10 secs, then flew quickly away. (MUFON)
August 13, 2011 10:21 pm NS
A ball-shaped light with "arcs of light coming horizontally from the center," like "reflections on a silvery surface," flew overhead at high speed. (MUFON)
August 14, 2011 10:15 pm Winnipeg, MB
Bright light like "shooting star" stopped in its path, was stationary for 10 secs, then made 90-degree turn and continued. (UFOROM)
August 16, 2011 9:40 pm Altona, MB
A bright object like a "flickering lantern" flew low across the horizon for a minute before going higher and disappearing. The witness did not think it was a Chinese lantern. (UFOROM)
August 17, 2011 11:00 pm Winnipeg, MB
A very bright spherical light flew over the city eastward. It "wobbled" and "zig-zagged" before turning a reddish colour and disappearing. (UFOROM & MUFON)
August 19, 2011 10:30 pm Lockport, MB
Three lights that seemed to be on a dark, blurry triangular object moved quickly overhead S-N at the speed of a low-flying plane. (PSICAN)
August 19, 2011 9:30 pm Winnipeg, MB
Two orange lights traveled across the sky N-S for about a minute, then vanished. (PSICAN)
August 21, 2011 9:30 pm Gander, NF
A "huge yellow ball" floated over the city E-W, without making any sound. At the same time, ISS was passing W-E overhead as well. (DND)

Saucertime, and the Livin' Is Easy
During summertime, it's been common to get UFO reports from people who are out at campgrounds or tourist resorts. Curiously, I'm not receiving many of those in 2011. what I'm getting from various sources are simply nocturnal light cases from people who are out later than they would in the winter, reporting odd lights in the sky.
The exception to this was a photo I received from, of all places, Chile, sent by someone who googled UFOs and came up with me for some reason. (The search algorithm needs a kick, I think.)
The person had discovered a daylight photo of the sky in which the Sun was at the bottom of the photo and a disc-shaped artefact was at the top. Simple geometry and a ruler showed me it was an optics issue, but when I explained it to the sender, the emails dried up abruptly.
Here are some of the recent UFO reports:
July 4, 2011 1:00 pm Cooks Mills, ON
As two witnesses watched hawks flying over the trees, a white, disc-shaped object appeared hanging in the sky. After a few seconds it "moved unnaturally fast" and then vanished. (NUFORC)
July 7, 2011 8:00 pm Winnipeg, MB
Two people watched two "large bright spheres" moving in the western sky. One remained stationary for several minutes before heading west. Their light didn't twinkle, and the witnesses had no idea that the objects may have been. (UFOINFO)
July 7, 2011 Ottawa, ON
A video of a formation of white lights was posted on Youtube.
July 11, 2011 10:05 pm Langley, BC
A triangular formation of lights flew low and directly over a witness, who saw a "flurry" of six multicoloured lights in its center. (MUFON)
July 12, 2011 9:00 om Quebec, PQ
A witness reported two "luminous, white, fuzzy circles" of light darting about in the night sky like "animals that play together." (UFOROM)
July 15, 2011 10:45 pm Winnipeg, MB
A bright orange light seemed to hover for a minute, then moved eastward until it became too dim to see. (PSICAN)
July 17, 2011 11:00 pm Ignace, ON
Two "orbs" were seen hovering, then the moved together,m split up and went away in two different directions. (UFOSNW)
