Oh, c'mon! Really?

Unless it's a promo for an upcoming SF movie (such as Iron Sky: http://www.ironsky.net/), the latest UFO video making the rounds is of a huge craft flying over Toronto on Valentine's Day.

http://www.examiner.com/unexplained-phenomena-in-national/enormous-slow-moving-ufo-spotted-the-sky-above-toronto-video

Now, since all of Toronto didn't notice this, it's obviously a manufactured video. This is despite the headline in the "Examiner", which states the enormous UFO was "spotted" over the city.

Not.

All this will do is use up bandwidth in the sensational UFO blogs and websites and be used by debunkers as more reason why the subject of UFOs isn't worth bothering about. And mainstream media will be even more justified in ignoring any kind of UFO videos submitted for consideration.

And people wonder why I'm cynical.

UFO Sighting in Ottawa

I had an interesting call yesterday from a woman who lives in the south part of Ottawa. She said that around 1:00 am on Sunday, February 5, 2012, her daughter was standing on their deck when she saw an odd object approaching from the distance. It looked simply like a red LED light at first, and moved at a steady pace towards their house, apparently not far above the trees. It was resolved at first into two red LED lights in tandem, but when it passed directly overhead, the object could clearly be distinguished to be circular in shape and "four townhouses wide." The underside of the object was revealed to look like "a circle with an H inside," dividing the object's lower surface into squares; the red lights were two sides of the H. The object did not have any visible wings or other features; simply a dark object hanging in the air. It seemed to hover briefly then moved off slowly to the northeast. Rather than being silent, the object emitted a loud, droning hum, very unlike helicopters that often flew over the area (as it is the National Capital region). The daughter woke up her mother, who did hear the sound but did not see the object, which by that time had moved off out of sight.

Analysis of UFO sightings in 2011 underway

Well, we're in the process of compiling and crunching the stats for Canadian UFO reports in 2011. Initially, as I had posted some months ago, it didn't look like we were going to have a high year for UFO reports, since we had barely received 500 cases by mid-October or so.

However, as has been the case in several previous years, case reports were delayed in being received and recorded by the various sources from which we obtain case data. So, the result was that although by the end of December we hadn't come close to a record number of cases in a year, by the time we tracked down all the available data, the number is much higher.

In fact, while I don't think we have reached a new record number of UFO reports in a single year, we'll be right up there... likely among the highest number of cases in a single year since the annual studies were begun in 1989. This isn't in any way a validation of the claims that "sightings are way up" that have been tweeted about and heralded to news media by some UFO groups. But if the numbers are up there, it does show that sightings have maintained a high level for several years in a row.

How many of those will be labelled "unknown" this year? How many will be "high quality unknowns" (cases without simple explanations that have been investigated and analyzed in some detail)?

We'll just have to wait and see,

In 2008, the last year for which we had reliable data, there was a record high of 1004 UFO reports in Canada in a single year. We are going back through 2009 and 2010 data so that we can get a good idea of how the past four years compare with one another.
